Day 4: Aronia effects in autoimmune disease

Brief introduction to our webinar posted below. Also at https://youtu.be/EERZXRfupow

Aronia exhibits anti-colitic effects, affecting autoimmunity. Here we have a more technical science webinar describing a paper published in March 2019 that describes the effects of mice with colitis, consuming aronia in their diets for 5-7 weeks. Adding aronia to the mouse diets improved outcomes associated with colitis and did this through specific cell types in multiple locations in the body. One thing the authors observed and think is behind the beneficial effects of aronia consumption for these “patients” is the effect that aronia clearly had on the gut microbiomes. Gut microbiome, immune responses, and colitis are interconnected and aronia may address disease through some of these ways.

“Scope: Increased fruit consumption is associated with reduced risk of colitis. It has been investigated whether the anti-colitic effects of the polyphenol-rich aronia berry (Aronia mitschurinii 'Viking') are mediated through Th17 and Treg.”
